Chess by mail has been played since at least the 1800s. This is the original play-by-mail game.

Standard Rules

Chess rules are assumed known. This document covers notation for email play.

Algebraic Notation

Use Standard Algebraic Notation (SAN):

• Squares: Letter (a-h) + number (1-8). Example: e4, Nf3
• Pieces: K=King, Q=Queen, R=Rook, B=Bishop, N=Knight, (pawns have no letter)
• Captures: x — Example: Bxe5
• Castling: O-O (kingside), O-O-O (queenside)
• Check: + — Example: Qh5+
• Checkmate: # — Example: Qxf7#
• Pawn promotion: e8=Q
• Disambiguation: Add file or rank when needed: Nbd2, R1e1
